First EU - Kazakhstan Civil Society Seminar on Human Rights and Rule of Law
29-30 June 2009, Almaty
Following the agreements between the European Union and official Astana in 2008, a pilot joint EU-Kazakhstan civil society seminar on human rights and rule of law took place on the 29-30th of June in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Entitled 'Judicial System and Places of Detention: Towards the European Standards', this seminar focused on so called ‘soft’ issues of human rights protection relevant to Kazakhstan such as aspects of domestic penal law, reform of penitentiary and judicial system, and rights of prisoners.
