Europe's Human Security Concerns in Central Asia

Date: Wednesday 16 November 2011, 11.00 – 18.00
Venue: Deutscher Bundestag, Jakob-Kaiser-Haus, (Raum 1.554)
Dorotheenstr. 101, 10117 Berlin

The seminar Europe’s Human Security Concerns in Central Asia is organised by the Open Society Foundation’s Central Eurasia Project (CEP) and FRIDE’s Europe Central Asia Monitoring (EUCAM) programme on 16 November in Berlin.

The seminar will discuss the EU’s engagement with Central Asia, including lessons learnt from the Arab Spring – supporting authoritarian regimes for the sake of stability. The debate will also focus on human security as a potential basis for the EU’s engagement with Central Asia. The second part of the seminar will assess the EU’s Rule of Law Initiative with Central Asia and possibilities of substantiating the Rule of Law Platform that the EU is creating plus assessing other European donor activities in this field. The concluding session will look into Europe’s engagement in security sector reform and governance in Central Asia – whether there is room for stepping up EU and member state activities in this area.
